Q: We are only a small firm and we need an office administrator. I am not being funny but I really can’t take on a woman who is going to get pregnant and be off on maternity leave. How can I do this legally?
A: You’re right, you’re not funny. This is plain prejudice and you need a reality check. Not all women of child-bearing age want to have children and even if you took on a male he could take part of his partner’s paid maternity leave so you could still have the employee absent. People leave for all sorts of reasons, often with short notice; at least you have plenty of time to plan someone’s maternity absence. Recruitment is about finding the best candidate with the knowledge, skills and attitude to do the job.
