Preventing People Problems – Filtering Job Applications


Q: We have advertised for an administration assistant and been inundated with applications. Some are badly presented and some have strange email addresses. We can’t interview them all. What can I do?

A: Although in a time of high unemployment you can expect an increased number of applications, being inundated maybe means the advert was not specific enough? Take the job description, look at the key knowledge and skills to do the job and screen against these. Be careful about automatically rejecting CVs with spelling mistakes as dyslexia could count as a disability but silly email addresses are another matter.  We have had applying for a supervisory role this week (name hidden to protect the stupid)!
