One of my team has booked a week away in Spain before asking for the time off work and one of their colleagues is already on holiday that week and so I don’t want to give her the time off but she says she is going to go anyway because she has paid for the holiday. What can I do?

You should have a procedure that staff have to follow for booking leave and hopefully that states that you may refuse to authorise a request for leave if it causes severe disruption to work schedules or other employees are absent.

In which case, if they go on their holiday I would treat it as an unauthorised absence and start disciplinary action when they return.
