Preventing people problems – Dealing with Regular Staff Absence

Q: We have a member of staff who has regular absences for irritable bowel syndrome. I do sympathise, but it also makes me mad that he does nothing to help himself, eats curries and never exercises. It all seems a little unfair -via hrdept-exeter

A: Well they say God helps those who help themselves and although he has a condition which would probably be described as a disability and you have to make reasonable adjustments, you do not have to let him get away with murder.

I would want him referred to a good occupational health practitioner for advice and who will help design him a health improvement plan.

Then monitor with regular meetings and start a capability process if he does not play his part.
